Margaret Sargent is a highly experienced voice teacher and singer/performer based in South Huntington. Her students describe her as exceptionally skilled, caring, professional, and enthusiastic. They frequently perform NYSSMA solos, and routinely receive scores of Outstanding or Excellent. In addition, they have excelled in college, scholarship, and vocal competitions, and are regularly seen in school and community theater productions. Each year, Margaret’s students perform in her highly acclaimed voice recitals.
In addition to teaching voice, Margaret is a Cantor/Soloist at St. Aloysius R.C. Church in Great Neck, NY and at St. Ann’s R.C. Church in Brentwood, NY. She also Cantors at other area churches regularly. In addition, she has served as Director of Children’s Music, Conductor, Cantor, and Co-Music Director at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church in Plainview, NY.
Margaret comes from a family of musicians. Her father sang with the New York City Opera Chorus, Metropolitan Opera Chorus, on Broadway, and with Broadway touring productions. Her mother was a skilled pianist and organist, church organist, and piano teacher. Margaret began singing and performing as a child, starring in high school musical theater productions and excelling at NYSSMA in both voice and flute. She continued her vocal development and performing at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, and took additional music coursework at C.W. Post, Queens College, and Five Towns College. In addition to her university music education, Margaret has studied voice privately with Stephanie Horowitz, Dr. Karen Van Houten, Jessica Zamek, David Leighton, and Becky Ambrosini, among others. She has also taken numerous acting, musical theater, and cabaret classes at HB Studio, American Art Theater, and Mannes School of Music.
Margaret has received extensive training in classical, musical theater, and contemporary singing techniques. She is equally comfortable and happy whether singing Broadway, opera, sacred, classical, folk, or cabaret styles. In addition, she has strong piano skills, which enable her to accompany her students during lessons.
